Advising the Global Sanitation Fund
The Global Sanitation Fund was set up in early 2008 under the United Nations with a view to tackle the significant financing deficit for the sanitation sector. It is a vertical fund, following the model of the Global Fund for Aids, TB and malaria for example (the "Global Fund") which will operate around the world based on where the most urgent priorities lie. it recognises that households and governments have a key role to play to build sanitation infrastructure. Rather than finance hardware, it aims to fund programmes of software interventions (such as sanitation promotion, media campaigns, community mobilisation) so as to leverage maximum coverage extensions from relatively limited funding. Since inception, Sophie has been part of the Technical Advisory Committee helping the GSF define its objectives and identify priority actions.
